Kongsfjord - Ny Ålesund

From Longyearbyen we will sail to Kongsfjord. A number of great glaciers come down to the sea next to each other. Tre Kroner are the three remarkable mountain peaks that stick out of this ice mass that is slowly moving towards the sea. Between the glaciers are massive birdcliffs that rise straight up out of the sea.

Ny Ålesund in the worlds northernmost scientific settlement. In the winter 30 persons stay there. But in spring and
summer scientist from all over the world will come
both for their work and too experience
Kongsfjords beauty. Ny Ålesund is also the place where Nobile and Amundsen started their airship voyage to the Northpole.

Less spectaculair but a place with good memories is Nillspollen where Jonathan wintered in
2002-2003. The route back to Longyearbyen goes by Kvade hoeken and inside Prins Karls Forlandet. There are two place where we can find walrusses.

Just south of Sarstangen is a bay full with seals, at least in 2006. Close by is a small Polish research station which we will try to visit. Just like last year and the year before. Some traditions you have to keep up. At the entrance to the Isfjord we will pass close to the overpopulated Alkhornet. And spent a night in Trygghamna which means safe harbour.
